John Beattie artist video installation at Dublin Castle showing Aikido Master meditating in the National Archives of Ireland 2023

SHADOWING THE ARCHIVES (2021-2023)

Shadowing the Archives was commissioned by The National Archives of Ireland with the invitation to respond to the State Decade of Centenaries 2021-2023. For two years I worked with the National Archives of Ireland as Artist in Residence to create a new artwork by exploring new perspectives on archival State material relating to the period 1921-1923 in Irish History. This process culminated in the exhibition Shadowing the Archives at Dublin Castle, which featured a synchronised double rear video-projection installation, with surround sound. The exhibition also featured a series of assemblages with newly produced photographs placed alongside authentic archival material, selected and loaned from the National Archives. Examples of this work including video stills from the film, and the installation at Dublin Castle, can be viewed below. I wish to thank and acknowledge the level of support, and trust, from all the individuals, cast, crew, cultural institutions, and funders involved in the making of this work - see the acknowledgements listed at the end of this page. For more in-depth information about this work, visit The National Archives of Ireland.
